Invisible Cities is a book by Italo Calvino, published in Italy in 1972.
The book is a conversation between the Mongol Emperor Kublai Khan and Marco Polo, with Marco Polo narrating the 55 cities visited and the dialogues between Kublai and Polo.
Invisible Cities has been a great source of inspiration for me, prompting me to start a personal project.
As Calvino had stated at a 1983 conference held at Columbia University, there is no definite end to Invisible Cities because "This book was made as a polyhedron, and it has conclusions everywhere, written along all of its edges."
I explored the book’s structure by creating eleven editorial groups, each representing a theme from the narrative. I chose the Garaje typeface for headings to reflect its polyhedral character.
For this project, I developed both book and digital mockups.
